The Eight Great Fears

The Eight Great Fears in Buddhism represent challenges on the path to enlightenment.
They are shown as dangers outside us but also symbolize problems inside us.
They symbolize the negative emotions that must be purified to achieve liberation.
1. Fear of Fire – Symbolizes anger, hatred and destructive emotions.
2. Fear of Water – Symbolizes strong desires, attachment and craving
3. Fear of Lions – Symbolizes pride and arrogance.
4. Fear of Elephants – Symbolizes ignorance, confusion and lack of awareness.
5. Fear of Snakes – Symbolizes jealousy and envy, which poison relationships.
6. Fear of Thieves – Symbolizes wrong views, ideas and beliefs that rob the wisdom
7. Fear of Imprisonment – Symbolizes greed and selfishness that limits the mind
8. Fear of Demons – Symbolizes doubt and lack of confidence that weakens faith and confidence.
